Specialty Drilling Fluid System

Aphrons aggregation and expansion

It is an overbalanced water-based drilling fluid designed to eliminate losses while drilling depleted reservoirs, high-permeability formations, and micro-fractured rock, with minimal permanent formation damage.

How it works:

  1. Specially designed micro bubbles called aphrons are crowded into an opening, which causes aggregation and bridging.
  2. The aphrons provide back pressure against the base fluid, which accelerates the seal building process.
  3. A dynamic barrier is created and transmits the differential pressure out of the formation openings.

  • Minimize fluid invasion in depleted fractured formations
    – Enable the use of single MW to drill multiple pressure zones
  • Improve borehole stability in reactive shales
  • Eliminate differential sticking
  • Unique rheological profile with superb hole cleaning
  • Superior lubricity, similar to SBM
  • Minimize filtrate invasion, minimize skin, better production

Application:

  1. Multi-pressure zone drilling in one interval.
  2. Drilling depleted formations, fractured carbonates, and high permeability formations.
  3. High overbalanced borehole.
  4. Reservoir intervals and high deviation wells.
  5. Strong inhibition towards sensitive shales.
  6. As an alternative for drilling low-pressure reservoirs instead of using UBD, MPD, bridging, or OBM.
